This quarantine has taken all of us on an emotional roller coaster ride. Kids are really missing meeting their friends, and mothers are tired of playing additional roles of teacher and friend for their kids. Thus, scattered emotional outbreaks now and then.
Through this post, my sole aim is to share few extremely unusual kids activity ideas with you to give both of you, dear mother and your child a little breather. If you think you are spending most of your time, either scolding your child or feeling guilty about it, these activities will help you to lighten the mood easily and rebond with your child.
CHANGE NAMES FOR A DAY
Sometimes just not being yourself can really help you to reach out to your kids and also look at things with a new perspective!
This one fine day we decided to call ourselves Sue and Pooh! What I loved about this activity was :
- Instant response to this name as opposed to her original name.
- How it lit up her face because it was like playing a game the whole day!
- How proactive it made her in tasks at hand.
Some more exciting name suggestions : Mr Booger, Miss Fartworthy or Mr Topsy Turvy! lol!
RUN AWAY! – This was so much fun! With mum’s always running behind the children for food, homework, bath, etc., a common reaction of the child is to run away at the sight of their mothers. Because they expect them to again pull them out of their favourite job in the world that is to PLAY! So one day I decided to run away instead. The moment I saw my daughter, I would scream and runaway. And believe me, she chased ME around the house instead of me calling her all the time! lol! All she knew was that for a change, she was the scary one and not her mum!
And when I mean switch roles, I mean literally turn yourself into a kid and your child into your mum/father for the whole day. I even handed over my phone to her! At the end of the play, I enjoyed so much because I got to live for a day completely care free, braiding the hair of my dolls, rolling clay, running in the garden without a thought of being a role model. As for my daughter, she said this was the best day ever because her mum was so cool!
READ A STORY WITH A MORAL DAILY
Since the commencement of the lockdown, as a routine, I and both my kids spend 20 minutes in the mandir where we pray, recite prayer songs, listen to a story with a moral value to learn every day, followed by prasad of course. A routine they have started eagerly looking forward to. Kids love to listen to stories and this is my way to teach them to care about each other, share their things, be honest always, learn to forgive and tell them how much I love them. Also, repeating stories at times helps to ingrain these values in them as well. After all, these are the kind of memories that stay with you forever.
A UNIQUE PRETEND PLAY – OPEN A HEALTH SPA
This is our favourite game these days. Once a week, I turn myself into a server of a Health Spa called ‘Ananda’ (inspired from the original Ananda) which is hosting kids from across the country for a day of well being. What SHE loves, is the amazing treatment and courtesy that her mum suddenly showers on her. And what I love, is an extremely fun way to teach her about good food (through different kinds of colourful fruits and vegetables served), personal care (face packs and hair oil massage) and good manners (table etiquettes, politeness, courtesy etc.). A MUST TRY!
