On my latest visit to our in house dermatologist for THHD, Dr. Nidhi Tandon, my agenda was to breakdown and obtain a better understanding about the sea of products for skincare available in the market. Starting from serums, face oils, moisturisers, toners to sunscreens, I wanted to understand what is essential for our skin at different ages and how to layer these products to get the best results.

Dr. Nidhi Tandon says, “As we age, our skin undergoes a plethora of changes ranging from texture issues to pigmentation problems. Everything from your genetics to the harsh external environment is conspiring against your skin. There is no magic wand to prevent aging or erase the flaws, but aging gracefully with absolute best care of what you have is the aim. So here is my guide to help you achieve your best skin today and through every stage of your life.”

20’s is all about prevention.  If you take care of your skin now means fewer skin problems later.

The most beneficial and important thing is to protect your skin with sunscreen. Sun protection should be a part of your daily routine. Keeping your skin hydrated by using the right moisturizing creams for your skin type is also important.

Ingredients to look out for in the skincare products you buy:

  • Salicylic acid to fight hormonal acne.
  • Kojic acid and Arbutin to correct minor skin pigmentation and dullness
  • Vitamin C to brighten up the skin.

In-office treatments from a trusted dermatologist

  • Chemical peels to brighten up the skin and medical clean ups.

Your skin may start to dry out with more hyper pigmentation, fine lines, sun spots, dark circles under your eyes and pores becoming enlarged. Its time to take care of your diet. You are what you eat and it reflects on your skin. Stop consuming refined sugars and processed foods. Add almonds, berries, fish, yogurt, green leafy vegetables, coconut and olive oil to your diet”.

Ideal skin care should include sunscreen and a moisturiser with antioxidants to help combat signs of fatigue during the day. At night add retinol night cream.

Ingredients to look out for in the skincare products you buy:

  • Retinol to increase collagen production.
  • Hyaluronic acid to soften the skin and hydrate.
  • Glycolic acid to dissolve the build up of dead skin cells and refresh skin.

In-office treatments from a trusted dermatologist

  • This is the time to take the plunge and get botox done to prevent formation of lines and wrinkles.
  • ResurFX laser resurfacing  for sunspots, texture correction and photo damage.
  • Photofacials to correct tone and enhance the collagen formation.
  • Regular medical cleanups are a must to keep the skin fresh.

Everything starts appearing in the 40’s. Wrinkles, jowls, large pores, pigmentation getting worse and loss of skin elasticity which is most pronounced around the eyes.

Use an antiaging serum followed by a hydrating moisturiser with spf during the day. For older age group, facial oils work well at night. Essential oils like jojoba oil, frankincense, lavender oil and pomegranate seed oil work very well for matured skin.

Ingredients to look out for in the skincare products you buy:

  • Retin-A and alpha hydroxyl acids.
  • Growth factor peptides to stimulate collagen.
  • Essential oils to rehydrate and seal in the moisture.

In-office treatments from a trusted dermatologist:

  • Lasers like resurFX, ulthera, HIFU, freeze the skin from sagging.
  • If the sagging and volume loss is more pronounced, fillers do a wonderful job of scuplting and balancing the face.
  • PRP aka vampire facial reintroduces growth factors back into your skin and stimulates collagen and elastin.

Hope these tips helps you look beautiful at every stage of your life…after all age is just a number!!

We at THHD strongly recommend that before you start purchasing skin care products please meet your local dermatologist who can guide you about products suitable for your skin type.

Thanks Dr. Nidhi!
